Frankstons Kelly Bowen came off the bench to score 12 points and grab eight rebounds as Gonzaga University women's basketball put together another outstanding outing as it defeated Pepperdine University 107-64 on Thursday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif. The 107 points scored by Gonzaga was the most scored by an opponent against Pepperdine at Firestone. The previous highest scoring output by the visiting team was 105 by USC on Nov. 21, 1982.

The victory put the Bulldogs in sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference at 4-0 and are now 15-4 overall. The Waves, who lost their first game in conference, fell to 3-1 in the WCC and are now 12-6 overall.

Gonzaga played nearly a perfect first half against Pepperdine. The Zags shot a blistering 58.5 percent (24-41) from the field and hit 6-of-11 free throws to go into the locker room up 55-28; the 55 points being the highest scoring output in a half this year by the Bulldogs. Gonzaga was also strong on the boards, outrebounding Pepperdine 24-9, including nine offensive boards, which turned into 16 second chance points.

"I don't know if we could have played any better," explained head coach Kelly Graves after the contest. "We were doing everything right; playing great defense, running and finishing in transition, each player was in tune tonight."

Kelly Bowen (6 points, 7 rebounds, 26 minutes) finished the game as the Zags used a late run to earn an improbable win over Portland State.

In one of the gutsiest performances of the season, the Gonzaga University women's basketball team battled back from a 12 point deficit late in the second half to capture an amazing 64-57 victory over Portland State University Sunday afternoon at the Peter W. Stott Center. The Bulldogs, down at half for only the second time this season, improved to 9-2 on the season with the improbable seven point victory. The Vikings fell to 4-6 overall with the loss.

The Bulldogs looked like they were going to be handed their third loss of the season when Viks Claire Faucher drained a 3-pointer, her fifth of the contest and 27th point overall, to give PSU the 54-42 lead with 9:25 remaining in the contest.

Gonzaga, not one to give up, started slowly chipping away at the lead with a defensive mindset. After Faucher hit the 3-pointer, the Vikings would not score again until the Bulldogs had overtaken them with a 19-0 run that put GU's lead at seven 61-54 with 1:46 left in the game. PSU went 0-for-8 during this stretch, including Faucher, who went cold missing six of Portland State's eight field goal attempts. The Vikings also turned the ball over four times, which turned into seven Bulldog points.

"It was a gritty team effort that was done defensively," stated head coach Kelly Graves. "We never gave up, we tried to take it one possession at a time and just chip away at them. We really pounded the ball down low in the final stretch and got to the free throw line, which was key. Portland State is a very, very good basketball team and I couldn't be happier to get out of here with a win."

It was full team effort by seniors Heather Bowman and Vivian Frieson, junior Courtney Vandersloot, sophomores Katelan Redmon and Kelly Bowen in the final minutes.

Portland State pulled out to its 37-30 halftime lead by hitting a blistering 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the 3-point arc. Faucher had 16 points in the opening half, sinking 5-of-8 from the field, 2-of-3 on 3-pointers and a perfect 4-of-4 at the charity stripe.

The Vikings largest lead of the first half was 13 points at 17-4.

Gonzaga, who only shot 36.4 percent (12-of-23) from the field in the first half, finished the game sinking 41.5 percent (27-of-65) of its shots.

Gonzaga returns to action next weekend when it plays in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic. The Bulldogs face Baylor University on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. and Texas A&M on Sunday at 8:45 p.m. Both schools are currently ranked in the Top 10.

Valparaiso (4-6) stays at home for its next game, taking to the court at the ARC again next Saturday the 19th as the Crusaders host Concordia (Wis.) at 7:05 p.m.  As always, the game can be heard on the Valpo Sports Radio Network (WEFM, 95.9 FM, Michigan City; WAKE, 1500 AM, Valparaiso) and online at www.valpoathletics.com, which will also have a link for live statistics and video through the Horizon League Network.
